Lasting contributions often begin with a practical question: what do people need to do their work well?
Updated a decades-old training manual as new trolley coaches arrived. The revision addressed modern pole-handling systems, battery-powered off-wire operation, regenerative braking, and operator safety.
Created the training department’s first instructor portal: transportation-agency resources, operating guidelines, forms, payroll and leave information, and accident-reporting instructions in one place—alongside photos, commendations, and driver rodeo events.
Founded and administered a Facebook community for driving instructors to exchange questions, resources, and experience. A place for professional learning to continue beyond the classroom.
First introduced to the Smith System before Muni, I carried its driving principles into my teaching—and adapted them into a personal framework for everyday decisions.
Look ahead. Set meaningful goals and draw on experience to anticipate what may come. Give yourself time to choose a direction.
Step back from the immediate situation. Consider how a decision fits into your wider life and affects the people around you.
Stay attentive to change. Remain open to opportunities, new experiences, and perspectives beyond your own.
Preserve options. Prepare alternatives and keep enough flexibility to change course when circumstances change.
Communicate clearly. Speak up for your beliefs and let people know who you are, what you need, and what you stand for.
A personal life application inspired by the Smith System’s Five Keys.
From the view through a coach windshield to executive transportation, the work begins with preparation and care.

“What might an instructor need, and how can I make it easier to find?”
I’m Channin, a retired SFMTA/Muni transit professional whose career included operating, instruction, supervision, dispatch, and systemwide operations control.
As a TWU Local 200 Training Department shop steward, I advocated for fair assignments, advancement opportunities, safety equipment, and access to the resources colleagues needed.
Executive transportation, event assignments, and film-production support added new settings for the same habits: preparation, clear communication, sound judgment, and respect for people.
Today, The Road & Its Stories brings that experience together for professional training, transportation, and production opportunities.
